Must-Try Foods in Kashmir: From Wazwan to Kahwa

Key takeaways
  • Wazwan is Kashmir's famous multi-course feast.
  • Vegetarians should try dum aloo and nadru yakhni.
  • Kahwa and noon chai are the two teas to try.
  • Pick up fresh girda bread from a local bakery in the morning.

Kashmiri food is rich, aromatic and deeply tied to the region's culture.

Food is one of the things our guests talk about most after their trip. Here are the dishes we always tell them not to miss.

What is wazwan?

Kashmir's traditional multi-course feast.

It's prepared by master chefs called wazas. Signature dishes include rista (meatballs in red gravy), rogan josh and gushtaba (meatballs in a yoghurt gravy).

What should vegetarians try?

  • Dum aloo, slow-cooked baby potatoes in a spiced gravy
  • Nadru yakhni, lotus stem in yoghurt
  • Haak, simple and delicious collard greens

What are kahwa and noon chai?

Kashmir's two famous teas.

Kahwa is a green tea brewed with saffron, cardamom and almonds. Noon chai is a pink, salty tea usually enjoyed with breakfast.

Which Kashmiri breads should you try?

Girda, lavasa and bakarkhani.

Kashmiris love their bakers. Try them warm with your morning tea. The J&K Department of Tourism also promotes food festivals worth looking out for.

Where can you try these foods in Kashmir?

Most of our Kashmir tour packages include breakfast and dinner, and we're happy to recommend a good wazwan restaurant in Srinagar.
