The best time to visit Kashmir depends on what you want to see.
Living here, we watch the valley change completely from season to season. Here's what each one is really like, and which months we'd recommend for your kind of trip.
When is the best time to visit Kashmir overall?
Late April to June, and September to October.
These months offer the best balance of weather, scenery and price, which makes them ideal for a first Kashmir trip.
What is Kashmir like in spring (March – May)?
Fresh, colourful and pleasantly cool.
The valley wakes up with almond and cherry blossoms, and the Tulip Garden in Srinagar opens for a few weeks around early April (the J&K Department of Tourism announces the dates). Days are pleasant and nights are still cool, so pack a light jacket.
What is Kashmir like in summer (June – August)?
Green, open and busy.
This is peak season for Kashmir holiday packages. Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam are green, high passes are clear and treks such as the Great Lakes route are possible. Book hotels and houseboats early.
What is Kashmir like in autumn (September – November)?
Golden, clear and quieter.
The chinar trees turn red and gold, skies are clear and crowds thin out. Many travellers find it the most photogenic season. The saffron harvest around Pampore happens from late October to November.
What is Kashmir like in winter (December – February)?
Snowy, cold and magical.
Snow covers Gulmarg and Pahalgam, and Gulmarg's ski slopes open. Srinagar can drop below freezing. Some roads, such as Zoji La, close, so check before planning Sonamarg or Ladakh. Read our winter packing list before you go.
